Quotes From Marshal KIM JONG IL on the Role of the Leader (Source:KIM JONG IL SELECTED WORKS)

-  KIM JONG IL Selected Works 1 p.293
Our leader is the supreme revolutionary genius, the sun of the nation and the benevolent father of our people, who has built a socialist paradise on this land and brought the people the happiness and glory we see today, by leading the arduous Korean revolution along the path of trials to victory without the slightest vacillation.
Because of the immortal feats he has performed for mankind, his extraordinary intelligence, outstanding leadership ability and lofty communist virtue, the great leader is supported and boundlessly revered by the people.
Our people eagerly desire to meet their fatherly leader who, by devoting his entire life to the freedom and liberation of the people and leading the vanguard of the revolution and socialist construction, has provided them with the greatest happiness and continues to provide the condition for their lives to flourish, and once they have met him, they brim over with the resolution to give their wholehearted loyalty to the leader, they are engrossed in infinitely solemn feelings and emotions.

-  KIM JONG IL Selected Works 9 p.114
It is important in boosting loyalty to make people cherish it as their faith and moral obligation.
Cherishing loyalty to the leader as a faith and moral obligation means having a firm determination to be unfailingly loyal to the leader and making it an integral part of their revolutionary faith and moral obligation.
It is only when loyalty to the leader is based on revolutionary faith and a moral obligation that it can be real, honest and solid in any circumstances, free from affectation and changing attitudes.

-   KIM JONG IL Selected Works 9 p.25
Revolutionaries must firmly establish a revolutionary outlook on the leader.
To acquire a revolutionary outlook on the leader means to devote oneself to the leader, with a correct understanding that the leader is the centre of the socio-political organism, and hold him in high esteem with a pure heart.

-   KIM JONG IL Selected Works 9 p.254-255
The leader rouses the masses to the revolutionary struggle and construction by creating the guiding ideology of revolution and uniting the masses and leads their struggle in transforming nature and society to victory by setting forth correct strategies and tactics.
The practical experience of the international communist movement and our revolution has eloquently proven that the leader plays a decisive role in the revolutionary struggle.
Since the leader, the party and the masses constitute a single socio-political organism, the role of the leader in the revolutionary struggle is unified with the role of the party and the masses.

-   KIM JONG IL Selected Works 9 p.256
The most important thing in establishing a revolutionary attitude towards the leader is to hold the leader in high esteem, sincerely and with pure conscience.
Since a revolutionary grows up and fights under the care of the leader, he must show sincere and hearty respect for the leader and be loyal to him, with a genuine sense of moral obligation.

-   KIM JONG IL Selected Works 9 p.256
The leader stands in the centre of unity and leadership, represents the desires and interests of the masses and embodies noble moral virtues.
It is a supreme _expression of communist morality for revolutionaries to be loyal to the leader.
For revolutionaries, the leader is the benefactor and teacher who accords political integrity and brings them up to be revolutionaries, as well as the father who provides them with worthwhile lives and happiness.

-   KIM JONG IL Selected Works 9 p.258-259
People acquire and consolidate their revolutionary view on the leader through the education to equip them with the leader's ideas and the ideological struggle to root out outmoded ideas from their minds.

-   KIM JONG IL Selected Works 9 p.256-257

True revolutionaries in Korea, who fought under the guidance of the great leader, were model communists who firmly established the revolutionary outlook on the leader.
They sincerely held him in high esteem based on a noble sense of obligation and conscience, not on any sense of duty.
Cha Kwang Su, Kim Hyok and other early communists were older than the leader, but they respected him as the sun of our nation and as a young general and remained loyal to him to the last moments of their lives.
To revere and follow the leader of the revolution sincerely and with clear conscience is a precious tradition created during the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle and an unshakable will of all the Korean revolutionaries.

Excerpts From "The Historic Lesson in Building Socialism and the General Line of our Party"- By KIM JONG IL

"The cause of socialism is a just cause for realizing the independence of the popular masses; it is an inexorable law of historical development that mainland advances toward socialism. Although there may be twists and turns in the course of the development of socialism, the main direction of historical development cannot change. The imperialists and renegades of socialism, describing the frustration of socialism in some countries as a change in the historical trend, are arguing that the idea of socialism is invalid and that it was a mistake even to have carried out the socialist revolution. This is a reactionary argument. " -- Kim Jong Il The Historic Lesson in Building Socialism and the General Line of our Party January 3rd, 1982

"The frustration of socialism and the revival of capitalism in some countries, when viewed in the light of the main tide of historical development, is only a temporary, local phenomenon. But we can never regard it as an accidental phenomenon, nor can we consider that it has been brought about only by external factors.
As the great leader always says, when anything is wrong with us we must find the reason in ourselves, not elsewhere. That is the attitude of a revolutionary and the right way to rectify a nestle. Only when we thus correctly saccharin the cause of the frustration of socialism and learn a lesson from it, can we defend and promote the cause of socialism. -- Kim Jong Il The Historic Lesson in Building Socialism and the General Line of our Party January 3rd, 1982
"In order to accomplish the socialist cause we must consistently maintain socialist principles in the revolution and constructor. To defend thoroughly and meet the popular masses' desire for independence and their interests is a fundamental principle that should invariably be maintained in socialist construction. A socialist society is a society which meets the intrinsic requirements of the popular masses to abolish the exploitation and oppression of man by man and lead an equitable, independent life; and the process of building socialism and communalism is the process of realizing the full independence of the popular masses." -- Kim Jong Il The Historic Lesson in Building Socialism and the General Line of our Party January 3rd, 1982

"As a consequence of revisionist policies, society gradually degenerated, and the degeneration of socialism was further accelerate by the introduction of "pluralism," on the pretext of the ''reform' and "restructuring" of socialism."  -- Kim Jong Il The Historic Lesson in Building Socialism and the General Line of our Party January 3rd, 1982

""Pluralism" can never be tolerated in a socialist society. "Liberalism" in ideology, a "multiparty system" in politics and "diversity" in the form of ownership which "pluralism" advocates are the mode of politics that is characteristic of capitalist society in which competition for survival dominates, based on individualism and liberalism. Socialist society is based on collectivism, and regards the unity of the popular masses as its lifeblood; therefore, socialism cannot be compatible with "pluralism." -- Kim Jong Il The Historic Lesson in Building Socialism and the General Line of our Party January 3rd, 1982

"The introduction of "pluralism" into socialist society fosters individualism and liberalism that encroach upon the common interests of the society, break the unity and cohesion of the popular masses and produce social disorder and chaos. Permitting liberalism in ideology and a multiparty system in politics in a socialist society is, in the long run, to open a road to counterrevolutionary maneuver that are aimed at demolishing the foundation of socialist society and overthrowing the people's government." -- Kim Jong Il The Historic Lesson in Building Socialism and the General Line of our Party January 3rd, 1982

"Historical experience clearly shows that if anti-socialist ideas are disseminated by liberalizing ideology and the activities of anti-socialist parties are permitted through the tolerance of a "multiparty democracy," class enemies and reactionaries will rear their heads, commit anti-socialist acts and ultimately drive the working-class party out of power." -- Kim Jong Il The Historic Lesson in Building Socialism and the General Line of our Party January 3rd, 1982

"The frustration of socialism in some countries is also due to the fact that they had not strengthened iternational solidarity based on independence in relations between parties.
It is a basic principle that must be adhered to by the parties of socialist countries in their relations to unite and cooperate with one another on the basis of independence, and to maintain their independence while strengthening international solidarity. Independence is the lifeblood of a country and a nation. " -- Kim Jong Il The Historic Lesson in Building Socialism and the General Line of our Party January 3rd, 1982

"Independence is the lifeblood of a country and a nation. Socialism and corniness are built with each country and nation as a unit; the party and people of that county carry out a revolution in one country for themselves. It is an inviolable right of the party of each country to map out lines and policies to suit the specific situation in its own country and to implement them in an independent manner. " -- Kim Jong Il The Historic Lesson in Building Socialism and the General Line of our Party January 3rd, 1982

"The great leader Comrade Kim IL Sung has put forward the outstanding ideology, based on the Juche idea, the first of its kind in history, that the three revolutions plus the people's government means communism." -- Kim Jong Il The Historic Lesson in Building Socialism and the General Line of our Party January 3rd, 1982

"Our Party's general line on the constructor of socialism and communalism is based on man-centered, socio-historical principles. "   -- Kim Jong Il The Historic Lesson in Building Socialism and the General Line of our Party January 3rd, 1982

"Society, in a nutshell, is a collective of people. The community in which people live, linked together by social wealth and social relationships precisely is a society. The masters of society are the people. They are social beings with independence, creativity and consciousness that carve out their destiny independently and creatively. The standard of the development of a society is defined by the extent to which the people's independence, creativity and consciousness are displayed."  -- Kim Jong Il The Historic Lesson in Building Socialism and the General Line of our Party January 3rd, 1982

"Hence, we must not view a society with the stress on the material conditions but view it with the people as the center. Nor must we view the process of social development as a process of natural history but as a result of the independent and creative activities of the popular masses, the driving force of social movement." -- Kim Jong Il The Historic Lesson in Building Socialism and the General Line of our Party January 3rd, 1982

"The primary task to be fulfilled after the establishment of the socialist system is to ensure that the popular masses perform their responsibility and plays their role as the masters of the state and society by raising their ideological consciousness and creativity." -- Kim Jong Il The Historic Lesson in Building Socialism and the General Line of our Party January 3rd, 1982

"If the popular masses, after becoming the masters of the state and society following the establishment of the socialist system, are to perform their role and responsibility, they must have high ideological consciousness and creativity corresponding to their position and role of master. The ideological and spiritual traits and qualities to be possessed by the popular masses after the establishment of the socialist system should be qualitatively different from those of former days. It was important for them to have acute class-consciousness against exploitation and oppression and great fighting spent when they fought to overthrow the old system of exploitation and establish the socialist system. But, what is most important in the days of socialist construction is for them to equip themselves with collectivism, which requires placing the interests of the state and society above those of individuals, and to devote themselves to this end." -- Kim Jong Il The Historic Lesson in Building Socialism and the General Line of our Party January 3rd, 1982

"For the popular masses to have the high ideological consciousness and creativity that is needed in a socialist society, the ideological and cultural revolutions should be pushed ahead dynamically. Through these revolutions the people are liberated from outmoded ideas and cultural backwardness and the reformation of people is done to make them men of a communist type who are equipped with the communist ideology and high cultural standards." -- Kim Jong Il The Historic Lesson in Building Socialism and the General Line of our Party January 3rd, 1982

"The ideological revolution is aimed at providing the motive force for the socialist and communist society by equipping the people with independent ideological consciousness, and it constitutes the foundation for refunding the people. Re-educating people are, in essence, remolding their consciousness. Our Party separated ideology from culture and advanced the theory on ideology that ideological consciousness decides everything, which means that ideological consciousness is a decisive factor in determining the actions of people." -- Kim Jong Il The Historic Lesson in Building Socialism and the General Line of our Party January 3rd, 1982

"If the popular masses equip themselves with a socialist idea and unite as one on its basis, socialism will emerge victorious and, if they fall a prey to an ideological malaise, socialism will be ruined. The main advantage of socialist society over capitalist society is that of ideology and the might of socialism is also that of ideology. Therefore, neglecting the ideological revolution is tantamount to losing the lifeline in socialist construction."      -- Kim Jong Il The Historic Lesson in Building Socialism and the General Line of our Party January 3rd, 1982

"The basic aspect of capping out the ideological revolution is to equip all the people firmly with the revolutionary idea of our Party, the Juche idea, and, on this basis, to achieve the firm ideological unity of the whole society." -- Kim Jong Il The Historic Lesson in Building Socialism and the General Line of our Party January 3rd, 1982

"In capitalist society where the class positions of people differ and their interest's conflict with one another, the people cannot equip themselves with one idea, and the ideological and political unity of society is scarcely imaginable. On the contrary, the capitalist class deliberately spreads various reactionary ideas to prevent the working people from being ideologically awakened and united. However, in socialist society all the members of society can be equipped with the communist revolutionary idea and the unity and cohesion of the whole society can be achieved on its basis because all the people share a common goal and conmen interests in aspiring after socialism and communism. Thus it is possible to prepare a reliable driving force for the revolution and to enhance its role constantly."  -- Kim Jong Il The Historic Lesson in Building Socialism and the General Line of our Party January 3rd, 1982

The driving force for the revolution is none other than the integral whole of the leader, the party, and the masses. In carving out the ideological revolution our Party lays stress on equipping the people with a revolutionary outlook on the leader, the organization and the masses and on uniting them behind the Party and the leader to make them a socio-political organism in which everyone shares the same fate."  -- Kim Jong Il The Historic Lesson in Building Socialism and the General Line of our Party January 3rd, 1982

Quotes from Kim Jong Il on the Juche-oriented Revolutionary World Outlook Source: KIM JONG IL SELECTED WORKS (published by the Foreign Languages Publishing House of the DPRK)

-Special Present to the Songun Politics Study Group (USA) From the National Democratic Front of South Korea Mission in Pyongyang

The revolution is carried out by means of one's thought, not through one's family background. Whether one devotes oneself to the revolution or not is not determined by one's family background but by one's thought. Of course, family background has an influence on the formation of people's world outlook and the development of their ideological consciousness, but it is not the same as people's thoughts. A man's ideological consciousness can change for better or worse according to education he receives. Even a man with good family origin can degenerate ideologically and become a laggard in the revolution unless he receives constant revolutionary education and training, and a man with a chequered background can become a stalwart revolutionary if he receives practical revolutionary education and training. The history of our country and that of the international communist movement show that people from rich families have worked for the revolution by following the road of justice, and many revolutionaries have consciously devoted their lives to the cause of the working class after vacillating during complex class struggles. (KIM JONG IL Selected Works 1 p.445)

Confidence in the victory of the revolution is based on a firm belief in the justness of the revolutionary cause and in one's own strength. A man with his belief firmly follows the revolutionary road without hesitation and vacillation in any difficulties and trials. (KIM JONG IL Selected Works 9 p.261)

A man who dreads trials and difficulties cannot become a revolutionary. If he is to become a revolutionary with an indomitable fighting spirit, he must be tempered in the arduous struggle from his youth. As the saying goes, early training means more than late earning. (KIM JONG IL Selected Works 9 p.277)

Revolutionary conviction is an ideological source of an unbreakable fighting spirit to brave any difficulty and trials that may stand in one's way in the revolutionary struggle. A man with firm convictions carries out his revolutionary task by unwaveringly overcoming hardships in any kind of difficult, complicated situation. But a man who is not firm in his convictions will hesitate and waver before even a small difficulty, scared of it, and in the long run cannot uphold his honour as a revolutionary. (KIM JONG IL Selected Works 2 p.113)

Studying is the lifeline of revolutionaries. Through tireless study, they acquire the knowledge of nature and society and the principles of the revolution and wage the revolutionary struggle of transforming man, society and nature. If they do not study, they cannot acquire revolutionary pabulum and they will lose the lifeline of a revolutionary. For a revolutionary, study is also an important revolutionary work. (KIM JONG IL Selected Works 9 p.356ff)

People's revolutionary will is toughened and strengthened steadily through struggle. There is no born revolutionary, nor is there a revolutionary who is anywhere near perfection. In the grim trials of life and struggle, people's world outlook grows stronger and becomes consolidated. Even a man who has acquired a revolutionary outlook on the world may experience passing vacillation in his mind if he encounters a difficulty in the course of struggle but by overcoming his vacillation, his world outlook grows stronger. (KIM JONG IL Selected Works 1 p.125)

The standpoint and attitude of people towards the revolution are decided by what sort of world outlook they have. Therefore the establishment of a revolutionary world outlook is the focal point in training people into staunch communist revolutionaries. Only when people are armed solidly with the revolutionary world outlook can they acquire a firm conviction of the validity and victory of the cause of socialism and communism, steadfastly follow the road of revolution and strongly fight against class enemies, including imperialism and all trends of reactionary ideology. (KIM JONG IL Selected Works 2 p.277)

Generally speaking, world outlook is the opinion and standpoint of the world. The viewpoint from which a man sees and estimates the world, the stand from which he deals with it, determines all his thoughts and practical activities. Therefore, it is the world outlook of a man that will make him think and act in either a revolutionary or non-revolutionary way. ( KIM JONG IL Selected Works 2 p.41)

A man who sees the world with the eyes of a revolutionary has a scientific recognition of nature and society. He can analyze and judge things and instances from the standpoint of the working class and act in accordance with the interests of revolution. He can continue struggling stubbornly and without vacillation in the face of all kinds of obsolete ideas that might be contrary to revolutionary ideas of the working class, and devote his whole life to abolishing the capitalist system and building socialism and communism. (KIM JONG IL Selected Works 2 p.41ff)

How people acquire a revolutionary world outlook is not found in any Marxist-Leninist classic, nor has it been clarified by anyone else. This problem has been resolved only by the great leader. (KIM JONG IL Selected Works 2 p.42)

A revolutionary world outlook does not come to people on its own accord. Just as every object and phenomenon is governed by the law of change and development, so too the formation and development of a revolutionary world outlook is governed by its own general law. People take up the  revolutionary  struggle to overthrow an outmoded society, having understood its reactionary character, the next step is revolutionary training. (KIM JONG IL Selected Works 1 p.50ff)

The process by which people acquire a revolutionary outlook on the world is not simple. As the great leader has said, people's revolutionary world outlook is formed, consolidated and developed through definite stages of the development of their consciousness under the influence of tireless ideological education and through their own practical struggle. So this process may vary according to people's characters and their living environments. (KIM JONG IL Selected Works 2 p.15)

If people are to turn out with revolutionary fervour in the struggle, they must have a clear awareness of the revolutionary truth. The process by which they acquire this truth through practical struggle is precisely the process by which they understand the revolution and form a revolutionary outlook on the world. (KIM JONG IL Selected Works 2 p.17)

To establish a revolutionary world outlook means that one equips oneself with the concept of transforming the old society; in other words, one arms oneself with the revolutionary idea and the viewpoint of destroying the exploitative society together with the classes that rule that society, in order to build socialism and communism. One also makes a firm decision to fight to the last for the victorious cause of socialism and communism. It is not a simple matter to establish a revolutionary world outlook. Such an outlook is not established in a few days with a few classes of instruction; it is formed, made firm and developed through certain developmental stages of consciousness. As the great leader has explained, the first stage of the formation of a revolutionary world outlook is to understand the essence of social phenomenon. In a society of hostile classes, the revolutionary consciousness of people begins to develop with a recognition of the irrationality of the exploitative society. Only when they correctly recognize the essence of capitalist society can they hate the landlords, capitalist class and exploiting society and acquire the determination to smash the class enemies and construct a new society free from exploitation and oppression. Beginning with their recognition of how landlords exploit peasants and how capitalist grind down workers in an exploiting society, people gradually become fully aware of the fact that the capitalist society in which money is almighty is the root of all human misfortune and misery and that this society is a reactionary one, hampering social progress. (KIM JONG IL Selected Works 2 p.42-43)

The second stage of formation of a revolutionary world outlook is the acquisition of a frame of mind that hates the exploiting classes and society, based on the understanding of the reactionary nature of capitalist society. The process of acquiring this hatred for the exploiting classes and society is the process of awakening to the idea of "class", which proceeds in close parallel with the process of recognizing the nature of an exploiting society. This can be said to be the preparatory process in which the basis for the formation of a revolutionary world outlook is laid down. However, that one hates the exploiting class and system does not necessarily mean that he or she has established a revolutionary world outlook. Looking back on past history, during the Japanese imperialist colonial rule in Korea many patriots lamented the bitter fate of a ruined nation, hating and calling down curses upon Japanese imperialism, but at the same time they could not bring themselves to fight against the enemy and did nothing worthwhile in the struggle for the restoration of Korea as a nation. (KIM JONG IL Selected Works 2 p.43-44)

To become a revolutionary, one must hate the exploiting class and society, become determined to overthrow the unreasonable social system and to devote oneself to the struggle for the construction of a new society--a socialist and communist society free from any exploitation and oppression. This is the third stage of the formation of a revolutionary world outlook. (KIM JONG IL Selected Works 2 p.44)

It can be said that one has established the revolutionary world outlook perfectly only when one understands revolution  and  is  fully  determined  to make  revolution  and  when  one  has  acquired  the  ideological  and  spiritual  qualities  and  qualifications  of  a  revolutionary  and  a  communist.  ( KIM JONG IL Selected Works 2 p.44)

Even after establishing the revolutionary world outlook, one should constantly undergo ideological training and practical work in order to strengthen one's determination not to yield to any difficulty, and constantly endeavour to acquire the method of revolutionary struggle. Furthermore, one must love one's country, people, collective and comrades, and observe the discipline of the revolutionary organization. Man's ideological consciousness can develop positively or change negatively according to what influences him. Hence, a revolutionary must be tireless in his efforts to continue the uninterrupted training of his ideology and to consolidate and develop his revolutionary consciousness through revolutionary practice. (KIM JONG IL Selected Works 2 p.44)

The process by which people conceive their opinions and standpoints towards the world is very diverse and complicated. People shape their revolutionary world outlook through a certain developmental stage of ideological consciousness; but the process is not as simple as that in which everybody moves up en masse to the 2nd grade from the 1st. Instead, the process is rather complicated and takes various forms. The formation of people's revolutionary world outlook varies in different conditions, such as one's class origin, social standing, personal experience, circumstances and education; workers, peasants and intellectuals are different from one another in their situations. Although two people may belong to the same class and stratum of society, one may be slow in his formation because of adversity, while another can be fast in his formation. One man becomes a revolutionary through class consciousness, which begins to form and develop in the course of his suffering from exploitation and oppression; another person assimilates the nature of the exploiting class and society gradually in the process of witnessing the exploitation of workers and farmers by landlords and capitalists; and yet another understands the reactionary nature of capitalist society and sets out on the road to revolution in the course of reading a variety of political books and literary works. Obviously, people's formation of a revolutionary world outlook is different from one another because of different motives and experiences in life, and the process by which they arrive at this outlook. (KIM JONG IL Selected Works 2 p.45)

"Comrades, the only way to save the present situtation in south Korea and finally solve the Korean question lies in driving out the U.S. army and reunifying the country peacefully"

-Kim Il Sung,

Speech at the 15th Anniversay Celebration of the August 15 Liberation, The National Holiday of the Korean People

August 14,1960

"We are now living in the age of the disintegration of the imperialist colonial system, in the great era of national-liberation revolution. Hundreds of millions of people who only yesterday were oppressed and exploited by foreign aggressors have won their freedom and independance, throwing off the colonial yoke. All the people of the world who groan under imperialist oppression are launching valiant struggles against the aggressors. The liquidation of colonialism is a trend of the times which no force can hold back.

-Kim Il Sung

Report on the Work of the Central Committee to the Fourth Congress of the Worker's Party of Korea

September 11, 1961

"We consider that the United Nations has no right to discuss the Korean question nor has it any right to meddle in the domestic affairs of our country. The Korean question should not be discussed by foreigners in New York of Washington, it should be discussed in Pyongyang or Seoul by the Koreans themselves."

On the Immediate Tasks of the Government of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea

Speech Delivered at the First Session of the Third Supreme People's Assembly

October 23, 1962

"In the field of defense construction, too, we have strengthened our defence capabilities to such an extent that we are in a position to firmly defend the security of our country and our socialist gains, even in the complex situation existing today, on the basis of our own strength."

-Kim Il Sung

Let Us Embody the Revolutionary Spirit of Independance, Self-Sustenance and Self-Defense More Thoroughly in All Fields of State Activity:

Political Program of the Government of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea Announce at the First Session of the Fourth Supreme People's Assembly of the D.P.R.K.

"All nations are equal and have the solemn right of national self-determination, of deciding their own destinies for themselves. A nation can secure independance and freedom and attain welfare and prosperity only if it achieves complete political self-determination and exercises its rights, taking them firmly into its hands."

"I am sure you have seen for yourselves and sensed how the Korean people feel towards the United States here in our country.

They do not have good sentiments towards the United States. Our people have a very strong anti-U.S. feeling. Probably this feeling has offended you Americans.

It is natural that the Korean people should have ill feeling toward the United States. U.S. imperialism is the aggressor which has invaded our country. No people can have warm feelings toward an aggressor who invades their country, can they?"

- Kim Il Sung

Talk with Journalists of the U.S. Newspaper, New York Times

May 26, 1972

" The most important thing in our war preparations is to teach all our people to hate U.S. imperialism. Otherwise, we will not be able to defeat the U.S. imperialists who boast of their technological superiority.

Therefore, we are intensifying ideological education, to imbue the people with hatred for U.S. imperialism. I think this is quite a natural and correct thing for us to do. We do not have to stop the anti-U.S. education we have been giving to our people or conceal the fact that we are educating them in anti-U.S. ideas just because you come to our country, do we?"

- Kim Il Sung

Talk with Journalists of the U.S. Newspaper, New York Times

May 26, 1972

"We oppose the reactionary policies of the U.S. government but we do not oppose the American people. We want to have many good friends in the United States."

- Kim Il Sung

Talk with Journalists of the U.S. Newspaper, New York Times

May 26, 1972

"In a nutshell, the idea of Juche means that the masters of the revolution and the work of construction are the masses of the people and that they are also the motive force of the revolution and the work of construction. In other words, one is responsible for one's own destiny and one has also the capacity for hewing out one's own destiny."

On Some Problems of Our Party's Juche Idea and the Government of the Republic's Internal and External Policies:

Answers to Questions Raised by Journalists of the Japanese Newspaper Mainichi Shimbun

September 17, !972

"Self-Defense and self-protection are intrinsic to the nature of man. A country must also have the means to defend itself. The line of self-defense in national defence is an essential requirement of an independant and sovereign state. While there are still imperialists aggressors, the state that has no defence power of its own to protect its soveriegnty against the internal and external enemies is, in fact, not a fully independant and soveriegn state."

"Education and transforming people along communist lines is the most important task a working-class party must tackle in building socialism and communism."

On Further Improving Party Ideological Work: Concluding Speech at the National Meeting of Party Propagandists

March 8, 1981

"The Juche idea is a new man-centered philisophical outlook on the world which offers a full explanation of the essence and law of the socio-historical movement, the revolutionry movement, the subject of which is the popular masses, as well as the fundamental stands and methods and guiding principles to be maintained in the revolutionary movement."

-Kim Jong Il

On Further Improving Party Ideological Work: Concluding Speech at the National Meeting of Party Propagandists

March 8, 1981

"National defense is the sacred duty of the young and all other people. Party organizations must teach young people to regard it as the greatest

honor to serve in the People's Army and to dedicate their youth and lives in defense of the fatherland and the revolutionary gains in the face of the enemy's aggression. Political and ideological work must also be promoted so that the people help the soldiers of the People's Army wholeheartedly and the soldiers love the people as their flesh and blood by displaying the traditional traits of the unity of soldiers and the people and that, with a firm revolutionary viewpoint on a possible war, they all do their utmost to increase our defense capability."

-Kim Jong Il

On Further Improving Party Ideological Work: Concluding Speech at the National Meeting of Party Propagandists

March 8, 1981

" The process of transforming people into revolutionaries in a socialist society is the process of a struggle between a new revolutionary idea and the outmoded ideas that still linger in people's minds.Throughout the whole period of building socialism and communism, a ceaseless struggle must be waged against outmoded ideas; only then can all members of society be transformed into revolutionaries and the final victory of communist ideology be achieved.

Outmoded ideas remain in our ranks, and they may infiltrate from the outside, to. We must strongly combat the outmoded ideas of all shades such as capitalist and feudal Confucian ideas, revisionism, sycophancy, factionalism, provisionalism and nepotism so as to eliminate the reminants of obsolete ideas that linger in our ranks, and we must also prevent the poison of the infultration of reactionary ideas from outside."

On Revisionism

"The process of the degeneration and collapse began with the emergence of modern revisionism which vilified the Leader and the revolutionary pioneers and distorted and debased the revolutionary ideas of the working class".
('Respecting the Forerunners of the Revolution is a Noble Moral Obligation of Revolutionaries'; Pyongyang; FLPH; 1996; p. 6).

"In 1955, therefore, our Party set forth the definite policy of establishing Juche, and has been persistently urging an energetic ideological struggle to carry it through ever since. The year 1955 marked a turning point in our Party's consistent struggle against dogmatism. It was also at that time, in fact, that we started our struggle against modern revisionism that had emerged within the socialist camp. Our struggle against dogmatism was thus linked up with the struggle against modern revisionism". (Kim Il Sung: 'On Juche in Our Revolution'; p. 471).

"No faction is better or worse than any other. All come from the same mould; they are all products of capitalist influence in the working class movement. And they are a poison that destroys our Party and the working class movement in Korea". ('On Juche in Our Revolution', Volume 1; p. 209).

"The imperialists and their servants the revisionists are now spreading revisionism in opposition to Marxism-Leninism and the communist movement. . . . It has made and is making inroads into our country too, and the anti-Party groups have exported it for their own ends. . . . To reject our Party's leadership means precisely to deny the revolution and capitulate to capitalism. Therefore it is necessary not only to fight against the revisionists who reject Party leadership, but also to combat relentlessly all the unsettling elements that provide good soil for revisionism". ('On Juche in Our Revolution', p. 213-14).

"Revisionists refashion Marxism-Leninism. They laud themselves as cleverer Marxist-Leninists than Marx or Lenin. Certain countries have this tendency. Some people insist we must peacefully co-exist with the Yankees. How can we do so without opposing US imperialism?" (p. 225).

"The sources of revisionism are acceptance of domestic bourgeois influence and surrender to external imperialist pressure. Both old revisionism and modern revisionism are one and the same in essence and in aims. Both deny the basic principles of Marxism and call for a renunciation of the revolutionary struggle on the pretext that times have changed". ('On Juche in Our Revolution', Volume 1: p. 317).

"Modern revisionism revises Marxism-Leninism and emasculates its revolutionary quintessence under the pretext of a 'changed situation' and 'creative development'. It rejects class struggle and the dictatorship of the proletariat; it preaches class collaboration and gives up fighting imperialism. Moreover, modern revisionism spread illusions about imperialism and in every way obstructed the revolutionary struggle of the peoples for social and national liberation". ('On Juche in Our Revolution', Volume 1: p. 531).

"We must fight 'Left' opportunism as well as modern revisionism. 'Left' opportunists fail to take into account changed realities and dogmatically seek isolated propositions of Marxism-Leninism; they lead people to extremist action under super-revolutionary slogans. They also divorce the Party from the masses, split the revolutionary forces and prevent a concentrated attack on the principal enemy". ('On Juche in Our Revolution', Volume 1; p. 531)..

"If we lack independence and identity, and follow in others' steps in present-day conditions, we cannot have principle and consistency in our lines and policies. This will not only eventually do enormous harm to our revolution and construction, but will inflict a great damage on the international communist movement". ('On Juche in Our Revolution', Volume 1: p. 549).

"We must continue to intensify ideological work against revisionism among the Party members and working people". (Kim Il Sung: 'Report on Fifth Congress of the WPK', p. 158).

"Whether one recognises or denies the dictatorship of the proletariat, whether one holds to the dictatorship of the proletariat or abandons it, is a criterion distinguishing Marxism-Leninism from opportunism, the revolutionary stand from the counter-revolutionary stand".

"The most dangerous enemy of Marxism-Leninism, of the dictatorship of the proletariat, in the labour movement and communist movement is revisionism, which provokes them point- blank under the mask of Marxism-Leninism. The revisionists, the betrayers of the revolutionary cause of the working class, have left no means untried in an effort to substitute bourgeois democracy for proletarian democracy, in opposing the dictatorship of the proletariat, in combating the dictatorship of the proletariat. The dictatorship of the proletariat and democracy have historically been the crux of the problem in the struggle between Marxism-Leninism and revisionism".

"Revisionism is a reflection of the capitalist ideology that has cropped up in the communist movement, and it is the most dangerous counter-revolutionary ideological trend. Party organisations should bring home to Party members and other working people the counter-revolutionary essence of revisionism, the form of its expression, and the harm it does. In particular, they should give a detailed understanding of the erroneous lines, policies and economic theories of the revisionists so they can fight against them with vigour". (Kim Jong Il: 'Let us Increase the Party's Fighting Efficiency and Bring About a Fresh Turn in the Building of Socialism'; p. 36).

"The people's government must guard against the poisonous ideas of capitalism and revisionism and resolutely fight against all attempts to infringe upon the socialist system". (Kim Il Sung: 'Works', Volume 40; p. 216).

"Modern revisionism which has appeared in the international communist movement is also creating a lot of difficulties for our revolution. On the pretext of 'reforming' and 'reorganising' socialism, the modern revisionists are following the road to capitalism and abandoning internationalist principles. It is, therefore, difficult for us to expect from them co-operation based on internationalism in the building of socialism. What is worse, they are applying economic pressure on us because we do not follow their wrong, revisionist policy". (Kim Il Sung: 'Works', Volume 40; p. 231).

"If the officials are to be completely rid of revisionism and reformism, and live in their own style; they must be firmly armed with the Juche idea of our Party". (Ibid.; p. 274).

"To establish Juche means, in a word to approach revolution and construction in one's own country with the attitude of a master. This means adhering to the independent stand of rejecting dependence on others and using one's own brains, believing in one's own strength, and displaying the revolutionary spirit of self-reliance, thus solving problems for oneself on one's own responsibility. It also means the creative stand of opposing dogmatism and of applying the universal principles of Marxism-Leninism together with experiences of other countries to suit the historical conditions and national peculiarities of one's own country". (Kim Il Sung: 'Selected Works', Volume 5: p. 500
